Ever since one of my first jobs sent me home with a marvelously slender Toshiba laptop, I’ve been impressed with the company’s laptop offerings almost in spite of myself: I suppose it’s just a case of love at first sight.
Their latest notebook, the new Satellite U500-1EX, is a 13.3-inch affair with one major draw: a multi-touch screen, making it one of the smallest touch-capable laptops in its class. It employs Microsoft’s Touch Pack for Windows 7 to enable to swiping and gesturing goodness, allowing users to easily flick through files and folders and launch programs, just by touching the screen, as well as other touch controls like tap, drag, press, hold and rotate.

Otherwise, the Satellite U500-1EX is a Core i3 machine with 2.13GHz, a 3MB cache and a 1066MHz FSB. It includes 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a TFT WXGA display running at 1,280 x 800, a built-in webcam with facial recognition, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, a DVD Super-Multi Drive and integrate Intel HM55 GPU.

It’s only available in the UK for right now, and costs about $889 there, but will hopefully come across the Atlantic soon.

Its become fairly commonplace to see Internet Explorer taking yet another small step towards a smaller market share with its browser. While it is still the predominant browser being used out there, the competition in that area is has heated up a bit more with Google’s Chrome Browser who has reciently taken over third place from Safari.

As pointed out by our friends at Endgaget, taking a deeper look at the numbers can reveal some interesting information.

Google Chrome made the largest gains while most others stayed flat

IE6 remains the top browser by version.

By version split, Firefox 3.5 is only about 6% lower than IE 6 or 8.

No one really uses the built in browser on the PS3 (so much for convergence in that arena)

Its no surprise to anyone really that the browser which comes packaged with the operating system that has the largest market share would also have the highest share, but this is sure to be good news to Google with its upcoming launch of the G1, rumors of a Google tablet surfacing and the attention Android is getting from everyone.

Steve Jobs launches sleek web device that’s “more intimate than a laptop, more capable than a smartphone”

Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs has finally put an end to months of speculation and announced the Apple iPad, the company’s move to bridge the gap between the mobile phone and laptop at its media event in San Fransisco.

The new tablet device, which looks to sport a modified version of the iPhone OS, will come with an aluminium back and a large touchscreen allowing you to see web pages as you would on a regular laptop.

Jobs, although confidently stating that “Apple is the number one mobile devices company in the world” and that “by revenue, we’re bigger than Nokia”, launched the iPad as a question, asking if “there’s room for something in the middle?”.

The iPad, which will come with an almost full-size touchscreen keyboard, will also be geared to enjoy all types of digital media and judging by the way Steve Jobs demoed the unit at the press launch, is expected to be used by holding it with one hand and controlling it with another.

With auto-rotate functionality, Jobs says the iPad is “way better than a laptop” and “a dream to type on”.

In a fairly lengthy demo, the iPad was shown to be viewing images, video – including high def YouTube clips – web browsing, flipping through a calendar, suggesting that like the iPhone it will be very app focused. However it’s also clear from the demos that the iPad isn’t supporting Adobe Flash playback within the browser.

The iPad will sport a 9.7-inch display (the same as the Amazon Kindle DX), will be half an inch thick and weighs in at 1.5lbs. It will offer a custom 1GHz “Apple A4″ processor and come in 16, 32, or 64GB storage sizes. Wireless 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, speaker, mic, dock connector, accelerometer and compass are also included. It will launch with the claim of 10 hours of active battery life and a month of standby.

Apple is aiming the device firmly at the consumer market with pricing for the 16GB version lower than expected at $499, while the 32GB version will be $599 and the 64GB $799. 3G models cost an extra $130 so $629, $729, and $829. Non-3G models are due in 60 days – 3G versions in 90.

Apple has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it has yet to set international pricing.

With the App Store built in, Apple say there will be a button that will allow current apps to be “doubled up” allowing you to maximise the new bigger screen although developers can also chose to resize their offerings to suit.

Apple has confirmed that it will be releasing an SDK on Wednesday for developers to update their current iPhone apps for the new device.

As well as the existing iTunes and App Store content, Apple has announced it is to rival Amazon’s Kindle platform by launching the new “iBooks” store that will offer ebook downloads from major publishers.

To try and make the iPad appeal to those who value productivity, as well as entertainment, Apple has announced a version of iWork that’s been specially adapted for the touchscreen device that will be offered at $9.99 for each element.

In the States, AT&T will offer iPad 3G connectivity with two contract-free options announced – 250MB of data for $14.99 per month and an “unlimited” plan for £29.99 a month.

International deals are due to be in place by June or July, but Apple has revealed it will be offering the iPad unlocked, so if consumers opt for the 3G model option, they will have choice of mobile broadband providers and contracts.

In what will surely sway even those that don’t like the idea of the touchscreen device, the iPad will come with a keyboard docking station allowing you to quickly put text into the device. Other accessories from Apple will include a standard docking station so you can make it a “great photo frame” and a more protective case to protect it when you are out and about.

Here are all the official Apple iPad pictures, our hands on with the iPad, while we’ve also now got the oficial Apple iPad video.

Monopoly owners Hasbro will be launching a circular version of the board game to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its creation the company has announced at this year’s Toy Fair.

The game, which stays the same when it comes to gameplay, will involve players moving around the board as if it were a roundabout rather than the traditional square set we’ve all come to know and love.

But it’s not just a random move to give die-hard fans a reason to buy yet another version, it turns out one of the first concepts for the board game was circular according to Hasbro.

Not to be out done by the latest video games, however, the Monopoly board will do away with cash and the chance to raid the bank when no-one is looking. Players instead will be issued with a chip and pin credit card and a central console that plays banker. No fair.

Expect the new version to be in the shops later this year.

20 classic games and 30 more to entertain you

A new games console that will emulate the Wii as well as allowing you to play classic Sega games is being launched in the summer.

The console, called the Sega Zone, will come with 20 classic Sega titles, like Alex Kid, Golden Axe, Sonic and Knuckles and Ecco the dolphin as well as a further 30 games, 16 of which are motion controlled.

Users will be able to control the action via two included wireless remote controls and when not playing Sega titles be able to play the usual array of sports classics like table tennis, darts, fencing, beach volleyball, and golf by waving the controller in front of the screen as they do with the Nintendo console.

However, gamers hoping to be able to load in more games will be disappointed, although the makers say that they hope to offer more Sega titles in the future, you won’t be able to add them to this system.

Priced at around £50, the Sega Zone is expected to be out in the summer.

The Sega Zone follows the launch of a revamped Sega Mega Drive console launched in April 2009.

The console, which is smaller than the original comes preloaded with 15 Sega licensed games, many of which are also featured on the Sega Zone.

It is, however, able to take old cartridges and is priced at £39.95.

The editorial staff here at MMORPG.com has made their decisions, and today we continue to unveil the winners of the 2009 MMORPG.com awards by naming our 2009 Game of the Year.

Coming up with a Game of the Year winner this time around was a difficult task. In the end, it came down to factors like: game growth, originality, overall contributions to the industry, fun factor, population and technological advancement and more. After much deliberation, the editorial staff at MMORPG.com has decided to hand this honor to veteran Sci-Fi MMORPG, EVE Online.

While some may question giving the GotY award to a game that originally launched in 2003, 2009 was actually a banner year for not just the game, which saw significant changes and growth through two major expansions, Apocrypha in March and Dominion in December. These two expansions significantly changed the face of the game, bringing it more in line with what players expect from a modern MMO. Between the two, the game added: Wormholes, ship customization (tier 3), Epic Mission arcs, a new New Player experience, social networking, planetary upgrades, changes to the game’s sovereignty systems and more.

Small wonder why USB 2.0 technology doesn’t score as a proper video carrier. Attempts to push 3D video game graphics or a movie in HD result in glitches from low frame rates (60fps and 27fps respectively). DisplayLink, USB 2.0 video streaming pioneer, has sold a million of their specialized chips last year. But you have probably guessed already that the latest USB 3.0 standard brings a lot of potential into the concept. So did they, and with ten times more the bandwidth DisplayLink puts a lot of effort in designing a new USB 3.0 compatible chip. They will show it as soon as CES 2010 starts.

DisplayLink officials say that 4.8Gbps are more than enough to transmit any sort of video to display of any size and resolution. While this is apparent, the peculiar thing is that they are into a bit of a split with what the first video carrying chip was designed for. That was designed to replace VGA and DVI ports with a standard USB hub. This is what USB itself is for – combining all the different types of ports at the back of your computer into one easy to use, small and fast port. The next USB chip that is coming is planed primarily for notebooks. Latest AMD and Intel powered machines are fully capable of providing adequate gaming experience as well as decoding H.264 so constant need to plug and unplug a display at work, home, elsewhere is more likely to happen rather than with a desktop.

As it was mentioned above, USB 2.0 chip hasn’t effected industry too much. However, when analytics considered 3.0 technology, they have come up with figures varying from a couple of millions to tens of millions sales per year. I think that is an entirely possible thing to happen because pretty much every manufacturer apart from Apple collaborates with DisplayLink now.

Over a year and a half – that’s how long the GeForce 8800 GTX remained in the position of what could be called Nvidia’s high-end GPU. Oh of course, six months after its release and – just a coincidence – just before the arrival of the R600, we did get an 8800 Ultra with slightly higher clock speeds, but it was nothing revolutionary.

Then two and a half months ago, the arrival of the 9800GTX awakened hopes of substantial performance increases, but in the end the card offered only limited gains over the good old GTX, and was behind the Ultra version. For owners of these cards to be really happy with their investment, it was high time for Nvidia to offer more than a few extra megahertz or to rely on pairing two GPUs on the same card.

Finally Nvidia has heard our pleas: The GTX 280 is the first real reworking of the G8x architecture. And, yes, breaking with tradition, “GTX” is a prefix for this new architecture. Now we know the company’s modus operandi: Introduce a new architecture on a proven engraving process. Due to the often very high number of transistors, the chip is expensive to produce and the cards that use it remain expensive, but it stakes out the territory. Then during the ensuing years, Nvidia develops its architecture on all segments of the scale, using finer engraving, but it is less optimized for high clock speeds. Finally, when the new process is under control, Nvidia moves it into the high end, which then becomes much more affordable. We saw it with the G70/G71 and the G80/G92, and now history repeats itself with the GT200 – a true killer with 1.4 billion transistors engraved at 0.65 µm.

I have now been using Windows 7 since Release, I love all the funky new features and upgrades to the good old faithfull default tools such as Calc or Paint. I REALLY love the DvD Burning software, its like Nero Vision Express just a little bit *Hides Face* better.
